At the Council Meeting on 8 July 2025, Council resolved to place on public exhibition the draft Code of Meeting Practice ('Meeting Code').
Under section 360 of the Local Government Act 1993, within 12 months of an ordinary election of Councillors, Council must adopt a Meeting Code that incorporates the mandatory provisions of the Model Code of Meeting Practice for Local Councils in NSW (Model Meeting Code) prescribed by the Local Government (General) Regulation 2021.
Council’s adopted Meeting Code may also incorporate the non-mandatory provisions of the Model Meeting Code and additional supplementary provisions so long as they are not inconsistent with the mandatory provisions.
The Office of Local Government (OLG) is currently undertaking a review of the Model Meeting Code. As the new Model Meeting Code has not yet been prescribed, the OLG has advised councils to consider adopting their existing meeting codes following public exhibition and consultation. When the new Model Meeting Code is finalised, the OLG will provide detailed guidance to councils on its adoption and the relevant transitional arrangements.
Given that the OLG has advised that a new Model Meeting Code will soon be prescribed, the current review of the Meeting Code has considered only minor amendments that would enhance its administration and clarity.
