What is this policy about?

A Nature Strip and Garden Maintenance Policy has been drafted to confirm and recognise the community’s role in maintaining nature strips in the Camden Local Government Area (LGA), and to provide clear guidance on the establishment of nature strip gardens.

Nature strips are Council owned land located between the constructed road and private property. Nature strips contribute significantly to the streetscape of Camden LGA, providing biodiversity value and act to soften built structures in urban areas.

Council owns and controls nature strips, however does not have the physical or financial resources to maintain the vast majority. Council therefore relies on residents and business to maintain those areas adjoining their property.

The main objectives of draft Nature Strip and Garden Maintenance Policy is to:
  • Enhance Camden’s streetscapes by acknowledging and supporting the community’s role in maintaining nature strips;
  • Define maintenance responsibilities;
  • Develop clear guidelines for modifying nature strips; and
  • Align with the Biodiversity Strategy 2023 and Urban Forest Strategy to promote biodiversity and reduce urban heat.

Council invites the community and stakeholders to review the draft Policy and provide feedback to help shape Camden LGA's nature strip maintenance.
