What is this policy about?

Camden Council is taking proactive steps to support the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) with the release of its draft Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure on Public Land Policy.

As the uptake of EVs continues to grow across the Camden Local Government Area (LGA), so too does the need for accessible public charging infrastructure. The installation and ongoing maintenance of electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI) can be costly and complex, presenting challenges for Council. To address this, the draft Policy outlines opportunities for Council to partner with third-party or private charge point operators to support the rollout of EVCI across the region.

The Policy provides clear guidance on the provision, installation, operation, maintenance, management and removal of EVCI on public land within the Camden LGA.

Key objectives of the Policy include:

  • Facilitate the uptake of EVs to support the reduction of transport related emissions in the Camden LGA as part of the pathway to net zero for Camden;
  • Support community access to publicly accessible EVCI as part of an integrated transport network in an efficient, inclusive and accessible way;
  • Provide guiding principles for the provision, installation, operation, maintenance, management and removal of EVCI on suitable public land in the Camden LGA;
  • Clearly outline the roles and responsibilities of Council and third party/private providers in relation to EVCI on public land; and
  • Promote visitation by encouraging the placement of EVCI at locations that benefit local businesses and attractions.

Council invites the community and stakeholders to review the draft Policy and provide feedback to help shape Camden’s sustainable transport future.
