Camden Council is renewing the retaining wall which surrounds open space at the corner of Broughton Street and Menangle Road, Camden.

This location is well known in Camden as it features the Rotary Club of Camden’s attractive mosaic and mural wall. It’s also a key route used to travel into Camden or visit the Camden Hospital.

What's happening?

The retaining wall needs to be repaired, so we plan to replace it with sandstone blocks.

This work also provides an opportunity to improve the sight distance for Broughton Street motorists by stepping the wall so drivers can see other traffic more easily at this busy intersection.

Low growing plants will then be added to improve the look of the retaining wall but not affect motorists. And two new Jacaranda trees will be planted along Menangle Road.

INCLUSIONS:

  • Reconstruction of the existing retaining wall, including sight distance improvements and some drainage upgrades around the intersection.
  • Reconstruction of affected kerb and gutter.
  • Road re-sheeting around the intersection following wall reconstruction.
  • Line marking and signage installation around the intersection.
  • Minor landscaping works on top of the retaining wall.
  • Two new Jacaranda trees will be planted along Menangle Road.

NOT INCLUDED:

No works are planned on the existing Rotary Wall.

No construction of footpaths or traffic facilities is included as part of this project.

No major landscaping works are planned.

The wall erected by the Rotary Club of Camden will remain in place, enhanced by the planned works which include minor landscape works, low level plants and sandstone restoration.

The wall will be constructed using new sandstone blocks, creating a clean and natural look.

The Cobbitty Road photo above shows a similar style, although the blocks in that location are somewhat larger.

Two Jacaranda trees will be planted along Menangle Road, aligned with the existing trees to maintain a consistent streetscape and enhance shade and visual appeal.

Additional landscaping will include a mix of native and ornamental plants such as Silverbush, Mat Rush, Spiny Saltbush, Rosemary Blue Lagoon, Society Garlic, Coastal and Low Horizon Westringia, as well as groundcovers like Yellow Buttons, Kidney Weed, Creeping Juniper, Little Con Lomandra, Creeping Boobialla, Yareena Myoporum, Fan-flower, and Kikuyu Grass.

These improvements aim to create a vibrant, low-maintenance, and visually appealing landscape.

Camden Council design teams consulted the neighbouring Camden Hospital and Rotary Club of Camden when preparing plans for the site.

This project is funded through Council's Asset Renewal Program.

The retaining wall works align with Council’s broader infrastructure plans. A future footpath with seating behind the wall is proposed, and while currently unfunded, Camden Council is actively pursuing grant opportunities to support its delivery.

Camden Hospital is heritage-listed; however, the project boundary falls outside the heritage exclusion zone. All works are occurring outside the hospital boundary and have been planned to follow the required approval processes.

There is a Milepost on the Broughton Street boundary of the site however it will not be impacted by the work being undertaken.

No footpath is planned as part of this retaining wall renewal and upgrade project.

Two seats are proposed on the Menangle Road side, next to the new trees.

The project has considered potential future works in the area such as a footpath and additional seating on the hospital side of the wall. These types of improvements are unfunded at this stage.

Temporary road closures and traffic management may occur during construction. Measures will be implemented to minimise traffic impacts, and affected residents will be notified in advance.

No trees exist within or are affected by this project.

Following consultation and exhibition of the plan, the project team aims to finalise designs, scope works and complete construction by July 2026.
