Upper South Creek Flood Study

Council adopted the Upper South Creek Floodplain Risk Management Plan in March 2019 to inform floodplain management options for future development within the catchment.

The floodplain risk management process in NSW requires continual review of existing studies to ensure they are up to date. Given the development that has already occurred in Oran Park, Gregory Hills, and Emerald Hills and the planned development as part of the South West Growth Area, an updated flood study is required to understand flood behaviour in the new landscape.

Camden Council has now completed a review of the Upper South Creek Flood Study and seeks feedback from the community to ensure it reflects recent observations and experiences during heavy rainfall and flooding.

Background

The Upper South Creek Flood Study area includes the suburbs of Bringelly, Rossmore, Leppington, Oran Park, Catherine Field, Gregory Hills, Smeaton Grange, Gledswood Hills, part of Cobbitty and Harrington Park. It is a fast-growing area with priority growth area development and urban releases.

The existing study was based on rural terrain data and does not provide flood information for the areas developed since this time, including Oran Park, Turner Road, Catherine Fields Part Precinct and Leppington Town Centre areas. Filling of the floodplain and mitigation works such as detention basins and drainage infrastructure were also not reflected in the existing study.

The updated flood study model broadly includes these development areas and will be used as a regional flood model to assess and control cumulative impacts of multiple precinct developments.
