FAQs
- What about parking?
There are limited changes to parking to accommodate the addition of two disabled parking spaces, two temporary parklets and an improved walkway between Capitol Arcade and St Paul's Catholic Primary School.
- When will the works occur?
The standard works will begin mid-August while the improvement works will begin in September. All construction works are scheduled to be finished by October, but as always, are subject to weather and supplier conditions.
- How will this project improve safety for pedestrians?
Temporary transformation of the entry to Larkin Place (from John Street) into a one-way road, with a colour asphalt treatment and a defined pedestrian path will improve safety in this high-pedestrian traffic area.
Installation of traffic calming devices and signage will encourage vehicle users to travel at a lower speed.
Improved pedestrian access between Capitol Arcade and St Paul’s Catholic Primary School, through the provision of a temporary colourful path, will make it easier and safer to walk between these two key sites of Larkin Place.
Provision of two disability parking spaces and kerb extension at St Paul's Catholic Primary School will improve safety for people with accessibility needs.
- Is this project permanent?
No, it is a temporary project. Council will offer engagement opportunities at different stages of the program to seek feedback from the community and businesses. Feedback can be provided at any time during the program by contact the Economy & Place Team via email business@camden.nsw.gov.au.
- How can I give feedback?
Council will be actively seeking feedback from business owners, residents, and visitors on the temporary improvements, program of activations, and any other features or initiatives that the community wants to see at Larkin Place.
There will be opportunity to provide feedback on a number of platforms during this time. Follow this page for updates.
- What is Streets as Shared Spaces?
The NSW Government's Streets as Shared Spaces program is an initiative to test temporary installations to support community needs and build the case for more permanent changes, with the aim of providing safe and welcoming public spaces. The program allows Councils to deliver trials to test changes that strengthen the amenity, accessibility and economic vitality of a high street and surrounding area, taking a place-based approach.
The Streets as Shared Spaces program aims to:
- provide more and better public spaces that improve walkability and connection, enable day and night activity, and increase footfall
- drive collaboration and partnerships between local government and other sectors, whether public, private, civic or community, taking a place-based approach
- enable long-term changes through trialling innovative and creative approaches, partnerships and engagement.
The program supports the Premier's Priority to increase walkable access to quality open, green, and public space in urban areas.
Camden Council will be measuring the impact of the new elements to see how effective they are in serving our community.
This project was made possible by funding provide by the NSW Government under the Streets as Shared Spaces Round 2 program.
- What is a parklet?
A parklet is a transformed parking space; a small temporary space serving as a community seating area, pathway extension or green space intended for people to stop, sit and rest. It adds vitality and playfulness to the space and creates opportunities for social interactions.
Parklets are new to Camden, but the concept was first used back in 2005 in San Francisco.
Parklets have been shown to increase foot traffic, and sometimes revenue for adjacent businesses, contribute to a better economy, and increase people stopping and sitting.
- What is happening in this space?
Council is busy putting a program of activations together to invite people to use the space, interact with the parklets and enhance the atmosphere of Larkin Place. Follow this page for updates on the program.
